I just started using Catia (though a long time user of SOLIDWORKS).

In SOLIDWORKS, if you model a part, when creating a drawing you could insert ALL the parametric dimenions onto the drawing from the Model..

Does anyone know if you can do the same using Catia???

Thanks

Yes you can. By selecting the generate dimensions icon in drafting.

You can add dimensions to your drawing based on constraints by using the GENERATE DIMENSION icon after you make the view.

Likewise, you can make dimensions based on your 3D FT&A annotations by using the VIEW FROM 3D icon.

Ok since I am NEW to Catia, where do you find this ICON. Also, one of my parts is a large frame, which was made of just PADS, CUTS and such. I'm talking huge. Will this ICON place dimension based on views selected?

Thanks.

Look up the command in your online documentation. You will see a picture of the icon. (be sure to narrow your search down to the drafting product - not all documents)

Solid7, no on-line documention at this company....

Designer,

Instead of hunting around for the Generate Dimension icon, use INSERT + GENERATION + GENERATE DIMENSIONS to activate the tool.

The icon is shown in the pulldown, for the next time you want to use it.

jackk, my Catia (V5, rev 9), under INSERT, there is no GENERATON, just

Drawing:
Dimensioning:
Annotations:
Dressup:
Geometric Creation:
Geometric Modification:

and none of them have generate in them....
I do see under TOOLS, OPTIONS, MECHANICAL DESIGN, DRAFTING, GENERATION, a tab to set...

Oh, let me use SOLIDWORKS....This company is just a small sheet metal company, not sure why they have CATIA. Plus they offered NO training...

And how long have they had V5R9, out of curiosity? (I guess they just got it, right?)

Designer,

I'm not sure if the old release didn't include it, or if it requires a license that your company doesn't have.

I think you're SOL with that release. Tell your company to upgrade to the current level (R17). R9 was about 5 years ago!

Jackk.....This company is OLD SCHOOL, the owner doesn't even like CAD drawings, he thinks they are a waste of time....Your right, I'm SOL....

thanks...

Never realized until I started at this company, that it is a "REVERSE ENGINEERING", type company. Let the shop build it and engineering will figure out what they did. Like I mentioned on some forum, this owner feels drawings can be done on a napkin....

like I tried to say earlier: hope he pays you well!

Pay is well, it's ok....resumes have been going.....

One thing that I would look at is to see if this is a legitimate, licensed copy of CATIA. If it's not, RUN AWAY, RUN FAR, FAR AWAY. And then contact IBM.

catiajim.....I don't even want to ask here....that way I can plead innocent...
