This is not strictly a AASHTO Code Issue, but maybe someone has some input.

I have been carrying out some construction work at an existing factory. The factory manager insists that all drivers (over 200) reverse park in the morning. This means that in the evening all drivers can drive out without reversing. The manager states that this is for safety reasons, he even mentions this in a visitors pamphalet as one of the companies most obvious safety measures.

Anyone got any opinions whether it is safer? I would have thought it would depend on what you were trying to do - for example if something heavy in your trunk drive in.

The mine site we are working at has a "reverse parking" requirement too. Seems several years ago - at a "corner" two cars backed out at the same time and ran into each other. It does make sense to a degree in that backing out into a travel lane is one of the most dangerous driving acts - (also why the mine requires horn honking before backing up). If you pull up to the spot in the travel lane and back in - all can see what you are doing - when you pull out, you have a good view of what is coming - you don't get this from mirrors.

Backing out of a parking space is a big factor in many parking lot accidents. I have been several places that require this to reduce parking lot accidents. I think it is a sound safety measure.
