Part family

Hi, does any one use part family?

I think this must be a usefull tool but i think it is not so easy to use.

beside I´m working on vista 64 bit , and for that reason or an other in need to use XESS as defined exel editor in order to normaly use moldwizard.

I believe that part family (p.f.) work with exel, so every time i would use p.f. I have need to change exel editor!??

If any one have any suggestion on how to use p.f. it would be great.

I use part family on a very regular basis. It does work with XESS so you will not need to change back and forth. It also works with excel but libraries made in Xess can not be edited in excel, I don't remember if they work vise versa. I use excel. The mold wizard library system gives more fexiblity to the application though. I have uploaded a screw part library I made if you would an example.

If you need to, you can migrate Spreadsheet data (all 3 types; General, Modeling and Part Family) from Excel to Xess and back again, for the current active part file. Just go to:

File -> Utilities -> Migrate Spreadsheet Data...

If you're using NX-5 or above

If you just want to test that they work once created then you have some actually distributed with NX in the Reuse Library. There are nuts and bolts and screws etc in most sizes that you'll commonly need. Try adding one of those parts to an assembly and it should bring up an additional dialog with a menu of sizes to select from.

C:\< or wherever you installed it>...NX5\UGII\Reuse Library\Standard Parts\...
[there are sub directories with parts below this path]

As for the other problem try if you must to set it all up on any available NON 64 bit machine. Once set up it will likely run wherever you need since as far as I'm aware it doesn't interact with the spreadsheet when it adds part family parts to the assemblies just when you edit the parameters according to a list held in the spreadsheets.

Also you'll probably need to set your part family directory in the customer defaults.

Trying with the supplied examples first might be a good way to ease into learning how it is done.

You're correct, once a Part Family Master has been defined, the brand of the spreadsheet used, or even if the spreadsheet application is still resident on the system, is irrelevant since the Family Member data actually in the Master Part file is stored in a spreadsheet neutral format that no longer requires anything except NX to access the date when you need to create a new Family Member Part. The spreadsheet is only used as a mechanism to enter and format the data as well as present it to the user in a manner easy to understand and manage.

I was fairly sure as half the machines where I was working didn't have excel installed.
