Does any one know what is the IEEE standard for partial discharge testing on power cables?

And is there any other way to look up IEEE standards without subscribing to the IEEE website?

QUESTION 1: Does any one know what is the IEEE standard for partial discharge testing on power cables?

RESPONSE 1A: IEEE std 400.2, "Guide for Field Testing of Shielded Power Cable Systems Using Very Low Frequency (VLF)," which addresses concerns when field testing shielded, medium-voltage cables related to the use of cables having extruded dielectric

RESPONSE 1B: IEEE standard for 400.3 Guide for Partial Discharge Testing of Shielded Power Cable System in a Field Environment was unable to get the document completed by December 31 and has received an extension until December 31, 2005.

QUESTION 2: There any other way to look up IEEE standards without subscribing to the IEEE website?
RESPONSE 2: Yes. Acquiring a hard copy of the standard.

IEEE standards are their own beast, and could use a lesson from for high-quality, up-to-date descriptive details. Limited information is available at

I agree with busbar on the standards he listed. IEEE 400 is a great overview document. Although I happen to be the Vice chair of the standard, IEEE 400 'Guide for Field Testing and Evaluation of the Insulation of Shielded Power Cable Systems', I was not involved in writing the current document. The document provides pros and cons for each type of test.

I encourage you to read the document and make your own decisions but I think you will find that VLF is recommended as the best cable HIPOT and PD is recommended as the best cable diagnostic test for the determining future performance.
