Hi all,

I am a newbie to SolidWorks and would like to know if there is any way to either 'section' or 'hide' only some components in a drawing view of an assembly. I am working on a model of a tube inside another tube held via clamps on each end. On the drawing view, I want to show the left half of the model with the clamp & outer tube showing, and on the right side of the model I want to hide the clamp & outer tube to reveal what is underneath it.

If hiding isn't possible, can I section ONLY the right half and ONLY the clamp & outer tube to reveal what is inside?

I have attached a JPEG of what I would like to see on the drawing. I did this in paint by taking screenshots and pasting them side by side...

Thanks in advance, your help is greatly appreciated.

You could try messing with a broken-out section on the right side and see if that gives you what you need. Otherwise, you can create a couple of section views in the assembly, pull them into the drawing and then hide/show parts as needed.

You have a few options.

I would suggest turning off hidden lines in your view. This will make the left side of your view correct. Then on the right side of your view, do a broken out section. To do a broken out section, sketch a box (or any closed loop). Highlight the box and go to insert>drawing view>Broken-out Section. Select a cut depth that is half way through your part.

Once that is done, if there are any parts that are still visible that you want hidden, you can right click on them in the drawing view and show/hide > hide component.

Bear in mind that if you're showing both sides in one view that hiding components will hide for both sides. To utilize the hide components command, you'll need to have separate views for left and right.

You sure about that Jeff? Is that relatively new functionality? I have never encountered that when hiding a component within a drawing view...

I just tried it in 2009. It hid the specific component I wanted to hide, but not the other instances of the same part.

Dustin,
Perhaps I'm reading it wrong, but it sounds like he wants to be able to hide a single part in one half of the view, but not the other half of the same part. While the clamps are two separate instances, I'd say the inner tube is one part.
What you're saying still holds true, you can hide individual instances without affecting the visibility of other instances.

Ah I see. I interpreted his "hiding" the inside components on the left view as being solvable by simply turning off hidden lines.

Hi all,

Thanks for the help!

I can hide one clamp (right side) but I wanted to hide only half of the outer hose (althought it is one piece). I was hoping that adding a 'break' to seperate the right and the left and then hide only the right that way. I haven't been successful.

A break won't do it, it simply splits the view so you can show it larger on your page. Try the broken-out section, it might get you what you want.

Thanks Jeff,

Do u know if I can section only the outer hose and not the other components?

-VM

Yes, you can. You can tell it what components to exclude from the section.

Jeff,

Thanks so much, I got it! That wasn't so bad, just a newbie trying to get familiar.

Another question: I suppose this is a matter of preference, but is it better to show two views of the full length of the assembly: One with the clamps & outer hose, and the other hiding the clamps and the hose and placing a note to state "not shown for clarity" or something of that nature?

-VM

Unless you're following some sort of standard, I'd say it's a matter of preference. Which way is easiest to get your vision across?
