Hi folks, I just arrived.
I'm working in inventor 2009 without a choice in the matter. I like it but I'd like a newer ver better. Anyway, I'm new at it. and my questions make me feel a little stupid. But I have some things I've struggled with, and I expect since I'm alone there will be more. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Thanx jeff.
well here goes.

Problem #1
I have created a part by cutting up a c-channel from the content center and drilling a hole in it. I have used this part in my assembly. During the process I ended up trying different versions, thus I finally settled on one that was named SPACER2 instead of just SPACER. The other versions have been deleted because I don't need them, and I would prefer to rename the part file SPACER.ipt. But I am afraid that if I do that inventor won't find it any more. One of my problems is: How do I rename files to names I like? Or even just name them with a part number later?

Problem #2
The next problem was that I went ahead and used this part several (8) times in the assembly. (just the one assembly at this time) Each time was a mirror of one or several. I ended up with a parts list that had:
SPACER2
SPACER2_MIR
SPACER2_MIR1
SPACER2_MIR_MIR
SPACER2_MIR_MIR1
SPACER2_MIR1_MIR
SPACER2_MIR2
SPACER2_MIR_MIR_MIR
Is there a way I could have prevented this? And, more importantly, what is the best way to fix it? The part is symetrical so even the mirrored versions are the same.

Problem #3
Another, though unrelated problem, is that, again I used a c-channel and drilled some holes in it, and I mirrored it so that I had two (2) of them, each 8" long. The parts list says QTY 16 in. So I would want to change it to a part that had a detail of the length and where to put the holes... I don't know how to avoid this, or even if I should try to avoid it, then again I don't know the best way to fix it from here.

Problem #4
So I went ahead and created an assembly drawing file in dwg format. Now the .iam file is named CHANNEL MODEL7. I have deleted 1 thru 6. I am sure that the name will change to a model number or a more descriptive name, but for now, I wish to just name it CHANNEL MODEL and have my associated assembly drawing recognize it. All the files are in the same stand alone project, and all in the same directory.

Problem #5
During the creation of the dwg assembly I made a sectional view that cut lengthwise through both 8" long c-channels such that the view would be of the inside of the channel. (cut one side off) However, all of the other parts cut and hatch nicely, but very top and the very bottom parts, the 8" channels refuse to cut. They just continue to show a side view of a full channel.

Problem 1: Use Design Assistant or Vault to remedy this, otherwise you will have to relink it the next time you open the assembly.

Problem 2: Don't use Mirror, simply place another occurrence and constrain it accordingly or use the Reuse option in the Mirror tool instead of actually creating a new part.

Problem 3: This is the nature of the BOM settings for Structural Steel in Inventor's Content Center. You will have to change the BOM settings in the individual file to be set to Each instead of the G_L length parameter.

Problem 4: Inventor 2009 does not have the command that fixes this. Instead you will also have to use Design Assistant.

Problem 5: You need to adjust the application/document option to Section all Parts. Can't remember if it is in the Drawing View box or the Document settings off the top of my head. But there is a setting for this.
