Pass partition plate hole

My first post, glad to be a part of the group!

Question: How many times have you seen a drilled hole in a pass partition plate. Can you point to a code or standard that cites why this is there.

It is a perfectly centered 1/8” hole, apparently purposely drilled. I have seen this before and concluded that it is to prevent any differential pressure between the pass partition plate cavaties, but that’s just my own thoughts, nothing researched as of yet.

Any help here is appreciated.

InspCool, sometimes holes are use to vent / drain pass configuration that won't self-vent / drain without added nozzles.

What you describe is a little small for a V/D though. Could be to prevent pressure differential, although it is not generally difficult to design for it.

The vent/drain holes in pass partition plates are common and sized normally up to 1/4", depending on the viscosity of the process fluid, also if the pressure drop accross the plate is acceptable and if the temperature by-pass is acceptable. I hardly can imagine a case where the pressure drop accross a pass partition plate could be so high, the only way to protect the plate is to drill a hole.

Continuing gr2's thought; and if it were (there to protect the plate) a 1/8" hole wouldn't nearly suffice - unless of course the PP Plate was very small.

Oh, and you always remember something else about the time you have just hit the submit button.

Holes can be drilled in PP plates to relieve pressure when the differential pressure is too high across the PP, and there are programs to calculate it. Yuba has one if they still share it. Those holes are not normally as small as the OP mentions.

The hole in PP plate is to vent the air during hydrostatic pressure test.
