Would anyone happen to know what type of mechanical HVAC systems would be found in an apartment building required to meet passive housing standards? There is a lot of information on small size single residential passive house but not so much on medium and larger buildings. Thanks for the help.

Climate?
Probably some air source heatpump for each unit to provide heating and cooling. Or a geothermal one if you have freezing temperatures.
Or condensing boiler (possibly with solar hot water) hydronic heat if you don't need AC.

You will need to look as this as individual houses stacked on top of each other rather than a central design.

What are passive heating standards and who publishes them?

willard3; I worked for the state of California for a summer judging 240 passive solar homes in a statewide competition for who's design was the best. There were some real doozies! Anyway, that was for the formulation of a standard. My point? I think the state of CA may have a standard or handbook on the subject.

@EnergyProfessional : Climate (-22degF to 94degF) Geothermal is a good idea. Location is within city limited space for wells. The other suggestions are great.
@DrRTU : Never thought of it like that good idea thanks, and would love to attend the event but Chicago is quiet far.
@willard3 : @itsmoked is correct depends on where you live. example:
