Pattern of a Pattern? Can it be done?

I have created a small grid of points from a pattern in a geometrical set. I have tried to select my grid pattern as the object of a new pattern and it get some "wrong workbench" error. I would like to create a pattern from this set of points. Any ideas/tips? Do I need a certain license? If so, which one?

Thanks!

Patterns of patterns are definitely possible - but not necessarily in every situation. Patterns alone can be quirky - and patterning them further can be hit or miss, depending on the geometry and type of pattern. It's not the best practice to undertake.

I've never personally seen that message, and I can't find any PMR for it, either. What version of Catia are you using?

Cposner - what is it that you are trying to create? You should apply pattern 2 to the result of pattern 1.

V5 R17 SP3. I made one point and created and small grid of points(unequal spacing) This mini grid repeats every 144". I would like to pattern the mini pattern grid)

Derek, I don't understand exactly how apply pattern 2 to the result of pattern 1.

Thanks

You would preselect the pattern from the tree before accessing the pattern command.

I have not tested this in SP3 - however patterning a pattern does not work in every given situation. (fillets immediately come to mind)

cposner, I see your problem. I created 2 sketches. 1 with 4 points representing the screw holes for a wear plate. I then created a sketch for the 6 places the wear plate would reside. I made a new part body, create 1 hole, applied user pattern for remaining 3 holes.
Now I applied another user pattern to achive the 6 wear plate locations.

What are you using the points for?

I am creating a grid for a Building Facade to use a knowledge template/powercopies. Each small grid represents a floor/facade assembly.

My solid model will be completely driven by the wireframes.

I decided to change my product structure. It actually will work better this way for me in the end. But I would like to know how to pattern a pattern.

What I did:

The building is divided into faces Labeled A,B,C etc.
Product A contains
A1, A-reference pattern, A2, A3, A4, etc

The number denominates the floor/level. Each level is the same in A. I build A1 and A-reference... 'A-reference pattern' is a vertical points pattern. Then I use "Reuse Pattern for Component Instantiation" in ASM design. Pick A1 and the point pattern in 'A-ref pattern' and VIOLA!

This repeats for all my grids A, B, C....then B1 B2 B3 C1 C2 C3 Etc.

You have it, just 1 small step away. Product structure should look like this.

Building A - Product
Construction - Part - holds vertical point pattern
-Floor A1 - Component/Product
--Floor Construction - Part - holds horizontal point pattern
--Part to pattern
--Gathered pattern

Now if you reuse pattern in ASD, pick the FloorA1 Component with Vertical pattern.

Derek
