Anyone have information on engineering certification and Mexico? My brother passed the FE exam and worked for a year in the states before moving to Mexico. He wants to get licensed (mainly for future use), but not sure if it is possible. And if so, who should he contact and what hoops need to be jumped through?

He has to pick a state first. Then look at their requirements. I just applied for reciprocity in Wyoming and they sent me a "proof of physical presence" form that was new to me. Every state has their own set of hoops set their own distance appart. He needs to pick one set and start training for them. The certification of experience might be tough unless he is working for either a U.S. PE or the Mexican equivelant. And the references from PE's can be tough (some states require at least one of the PE references to be licensed in that state).

has really good cross references to the state board web pages. I'd suggest to anyone that they make sure the state they pick accepts NCEES council records (it is hard to believe how easy that makes reciprocity applications).

Good luck to him.

Can't help you with whom to contact, he should determine that from local authorities. However, Mexico, at least back when the freed trade agreeement was first being discussed, did not require passing of an exam to be registered. My understanding was that education was the only requirement.

Mexico is still very class structured. If you are Mexican and of Indian descent from the likes of Yuccatan or Sonora you not going to get registered very easily. First of all your chance of getting into the one of the engineering schools is slim ( because of who you are and the education you recieved up to that time).
If you do graduate and get a Professiional Diploma you still have to be accepted by the Professional Associations many of whos members are of Spanish m not Indian ( or native Mexican origon). Having worked there I can tell you the people with the spanish surnames who can trace their history back to Spain still think they are better and entitled to run things, Mexico is still a Spanish colony ot them.
Mexico is still a stratified society, If you study it ( or llive ther for a while ) themore you may see why money isn't the only reason people want out of there.

He is American, with a BSME from a US accredited school, and passed the FE. The issue is living and working in Mexico City, and seeking to become registered appropriately, without the benefit of working under a US registered PE for the next several years.

In the future, he wants to be able to work as a licensed engineer in the US, getting the appropriate state license at that time.
