Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but here goes anyway. I know you can do this in other ways.

Create a simple solid pad.

Position mouse cursor so that if you would intersect two surfaces at point with an infinite line normal to screen.

Now hold down the ALT KEY.

Now press down LMB.
Now press down RMB
Now press down LMB once again

Now you get the selection of the face beyond that which is visible without rotating.

This also works for other entity types.

If I understand you correctly, simply place the cursor over the part and hit the down arrow on the keyboard. Then select from the list.

Thats another way of doing it. The one I have shown mimics closely the methodology known as "Query Bin" in ProEngineer.
