What is the typical distinction between a pier and a column, like in concrete design? If my understanding is right, a pier is often less deep than it is wide...and used for bearing only. A column, on the other hand, would be like where a footing would be needed in terms of spreading out the load per the allowable bearing pressure...and would be needed (along with the footing) for when there are significant moments applied to the column. Thanks.
