Hello,

I have seen the standard slot size of 0.01 inches when i install piezometers. I usually use the silica sans 20/40.

Is there any difference in the performance of the piezometer if I use a different slot size?. I have read of the 0.005 inch size. To me, it is all the same as at the end i want to measure water levels. Water will seep through any slot no matter the size.

It might take longer if the slot is narrower but at the end, water will seep through.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

From my experience, I design PZs to the material they will be tipped in. For example, in a fine clay the PZ filter pack will likely be finer than if it were tipped in a sand to meet filter compatibility. Then the screen can be sized to the filter pack gradation. This is a conservative method, as I work in a risk averse field. If it is for general monitoring, and no pumping will be done, then filter gradation isn't as critical. In that case I don't see that much of an issue with different slot sizes. Slot sizing is more important if you will be pumping from them.
