Guys:

Can you please shed some light on to estimation of pile capacity (steel C3X6 or W6X9 sections) driven into soil. These are meant for fixed and single-axis trackers for solar panels, driven around 10-20' deep.

We have bore log information (only the SPT blow counts and visual soil clarification) and I am wondering based on experience which method would give reasonable results (in-lieu of pile load tests) for the compression, uplift capacity estimate?

Thanks
NT

Find a copy of Tomlinson's Pile Design book and read up on it there.

There are numerous texts' such as Big H mentions, but they all may or may give the rough relationship between blow count (N) and density or shear strength. Perhaps a Google search will bring up that. Also the US Navy has published geotech manuals under the general title NAVFAC and DM (design manuals). DM -7 has what you need. One of the pile driving companies that show up here also will down load that manual free. Do some searching. Try this site: It came up as part of a NAVFAC search.

Oldest guy, thanks so much for the references

As to driving the piles, you would probably confirm the the capacity by using dynamic formula such as the Gates formula (modifed by Flaate and also by Washington State DOT). i.e., using the formula you would set "the set". For these type of structures anything more "refined" would be, in my humble opinion, overkill.

Thanks, too, for the reference Cliff . . .
