Pinpoint leak point in underground storage steel tank

Hello All,
Hope everyone is in good health,
We have an underground steel tank, single layer, that started leaking,
I was curious if there is any method to determine the leak location and pin-point it.
Are there any sensors? any intuitive method to be used?

A few more details would help, like a cross section and plan drawing.

a set of holes or tubes pushed or drilled next tot he tank where you can sample the water / fluid etc should give you an idea where the leak is in terms of 1-2m as the smell or density or colour will be higher closer to the leak.

What type of product? type of back fill?

Can you enter the tank to do a clean and fill?

One way I had to do this was fill the tank with water, carefully monitor the level over many hours and if it kept leaking, emptied another 250mmm and started again. Took about five days to determine where on the tank shell it couldn't be, but the idea was to find a band where it was leaking and then where it wasn't.

Eventually found it in an internal inspection where we could see the liquid leaking out by a set of ripples on the water surface. Very fortunate to find it as it was a20 foot diam tank 100 ft long and the hole was about 15mm. surronded by concrete so couldn't do an external test.
