I am designing T-post pipe supports with pipe columns. I am looking for a design reference for designing the base plates and anchor bolts which are subject to axial load and overturning moments. Does anyone know of a good design reference?

The AISC as well as the CISC has information regarding design of column base plates and anchor rods for axial, small moment and large moment. If you are a member, the AISC has an excellent free paper outlining in detail the method.

For round sections, the general assumption is that the actual dimension of the baseplate for sizing the plate thickness is based on 0.8 x OD of the tube.

One of AISC's Design Guides is a good reference. I use the method found in a Gaylord and Gaylord book, where the maximum concrete pressure under the base plate is set to the allowable (I use 0.35 f'c), the depth of this triangular concrete pressure stress block under the base plate is equal to "x", and moments are summed about the anchor bolts on the tension side of the base plate. This results in a quadratic equation, and "x" is easily solved for. The tension in the anchor bolts on the tension side of the base plate is equal to the volume of the concrete pressure stress block, minus the downward load from the column. After you know this information, you can check the thickness of the base plate (bending on both the compression side and tension side of the column must be checked).

I have AISC Design Guide #1. I never noticed the paragraph (3.1.3) pertaining to HSS and Pipe. thank you for the assistance.
