I am currently working on a project where we are installing a new 16" forcemain to replace an existing 10" forcemain. Since there are extensive utilities in the area I'm considering pipe bursting, or pipe reaming but I don't have much information on either one. If anyone has any experience or knowledge pros & cons on the subjects I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks

If you replace a 10" with a 16" you will have no idea what forces you may put onto adjacent services from the soil being displaced by the larger diameter, especially if the other services are crossing yours.

If you have a handle on the locations of the other pipes in the area that you cross and parallel, a decent pipe bursting contractor should be able to do this. Do you need 16"/ I ask because the HDPE that will be used to replace the old pipe has an 'n' value of .09. Where is this project?

HDPE has an "n" of 0.009, which, I'm sure is what sewerrat meant.

Thanks for your response. I've got a couple of other question,

1. Bends? Would we have to dig a staging pit and start a new run? The bend appears to be located in the middle of a major highway.

2. Can you use pipe reaming with ductile iron?

Thanks,
again

How large is the bend? Most pipe bursting heads follow the pipe because that's where the cable is. Ductile can be burst. It just takes a little more pressure and a different head.

The bends are 45 degrees.

Thanks

Look at the TT Technology website for info on the bursting. They are a manufacturer of bursting equipment. Located in Illinios. They will be able to answer any questions you have. I think the bursting will go through one 45 degree bend. You may want to look at microtunneling under the road and burst everything else. Just to be safe.
