Pipe to Pipe connection--Valid even for Lateral connection 2

Dear All,

We have a blow down header of CS 20" size wherein we need to have a 20 x 12 connection.
As per PMS branch table it calls for Pipe to Pipe connection with RF pad.

As per another clause in the Piping design philosophy it has been advised to have a lateral tee on the blow down header in case where the branch size is greater than half the size of the header.
In our case header size is 20" & the branch size is 12" hence we need Latrolet for this connection.

Can I go ahead with Pipe to Pipe connection for this lateral connection?

My understanding is, when PMS branch table says Pipe to Pipe, I have to make it Pipe to Pipe connection even though it is Lateral connection.

Pls revert with your advice.

It's up to you.

Just because the piping material spec says something, it isn't fixed. My guess is that the branch table was designed for straight tees, not lateral tees. There is no "have to" about this.

My piping spec I'm working to at the moment calls the branch connection table a "..guide", i.e. you can vary it if you want to with good reason.

At that size and angle (assume its 45 degrees?)I would go for a fitting and avoid all the calculations and extra welding of reinforcement pads etc and then you comply with the philosophy

Make sure you use the correct SIF's in your stress analysis!!!

You need the owners and process engineers agreement to deviate away from the pipe specification. Otherwise you can design a branch connection anyway you like to per the piping code rules.

I am sure that your branch table with Pipe to Pipe connection was calculated originally with respect to 90 Deg angle therefore the calculation would need to be done for lateral connection. I agree with LI and go with Lateral fitting and avoid the calculations, reinforcement pads etc. I am currently working in clients team on project and the branch tables in piping spec are all based on 90 Deg and where pipe to pipe stipulated calculation has to be reviewed.
