Hello, I was hoping some people here could tell me about their careers as pipeline engineers, if they started with a mechanical engineering degree. I don't mean process engineering - I'm considering the paths I can take with my degree (mech eng).
I currently have 3 years experience in mining - a mix of water pipeline design and materials handling / conveying. The water pipelines I've worked on have all been clean water, at room temperature, with pressures ranging from 500kPa to 10,000kPa. I've done a lot of work on transient analysis / water hammer, and I have experience using Bentley Hammer.
I'm interested in the technical scope of your jobs, and how difficult it would be for someone with my experience in non hazardous, fairly 'run of the mill' water pipelines to get into.
I'm particularly interested in the oil and gas industry as it's on the rise here in Australia. Any papers / information resources you could point me to would be great.
Thanks.
