Hi i got this question from Hazop, what will happen to a recip compressor if the suction valve on the suction piping closed assuming spillback didnt work?
My thought is that it will create a vacuum in the suction piping until no more gas particle can flow through the system, so eventually the compressor is running in a condition where the compressor suction and discharge valves will not open anymore (since no more gas to cause any differential pressure to open the valves), and the piston is running in a near vacuum condition. My colleague thinks that the recip compressor will vibrate violently and trip, but i think since no more gas load on the piston but only inertia load is acting, the vibration should be a lot lesser?
Your thoughts is welcome, and if you came across such situation i will be very interested to find out.
