hello experts,

Sorry for the rookie question.
I have a pump with a dual pressurized Plan 53B. Does a "drain" required in the seal gland? Whats the best practice? Because per API 682, "quench" and "drain" connections are rarely provided because they are only required when a throttle bushing is provided. A throttle bushing is not provided with a standard Arrangement 2 and 3 configurations of API 682 seal. Plan 53B is Arrangement 3. Thanks.

The drain in this case may be in the seal gland to drain the barrier fluid. It is not common to have throttle bushing with dual pressurised seals however they can be employed. For example on amonia application at low temperatures. We inject N2 to prevent icing.

I think the drain connection in your case is to drain the barrier fluid for maintenance.

Trust this helps.
