Simple example to explain my question:
An assembly with two identical cubes spaced apart a given distance x from their nearest faces.

How would you create an assembly work plane that is always x/2 from each object (always in the middle of the two). I know you can constrain a work plane to a sketch with projected geometry so how would you do this?

Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately the Mid-Plane work plane option is not available to the Assembly interface.

If there is a mate constraint that keeps those cubes x distance apart you can use a parameter equation of x/2 offset from one face of the cube to accomplish what you want. There are some more complicated ways, but this is probably the easiest.

mflayler - that's it exactly. create a constraint betweent the cubes. open functions (Fx) and note the d# of the contraint. Create a work plane offset from cube by d#/2. you can drive the constraint for various positions.
