Plastic 2D model with Mohr-Coulomb criteria

Hi everybody,

I made a 2D model with Abaqus/CAE 6.7 (S4R shell elems.) to analyze a problem involving 2 types of soils. In order to predict failure, I'm trying to use Mohr-Coulomb plasticity , but I'm getting errors (a message like "Mohr-Coulomb can't be used with plane stress appears).

This means that I can't use M-C criteria with shell elements? If so, how can I make a planar analysis with Mohr-Coulomb plasticity.

Any idea will be really appreciated
Thanks in advance.

S4R are 3D shell elements, not 2D shells. Also, according to the docs;

"The Mohr-Coulomb plasticity model can be used with any stress/displacement elements in Abaqus/Standard other than one-dimensional elements (beam and truss elements) or elements for which the assumed stress state is plane stress (plane stress, shell, and membrane elements)."

Maybe you need to look at plane strain elements - section 22.1.3 of the v6.7 Users Manual lists the element types available.

Thanks for your answer. I have to admit that I must be more careful reading the manuals.

Anyway, I see now that the shell elements can't be used with the M-C criteria. But according to section 22.1.3 there are 16 other elements (2D plane strain) to choose from. I'll try some of them.

(any aditional comment will also be greatly appreciated)

Thank you very much.
Regards
