I am trying to analyse a frame plastically but have run into trouble, I have selected a critical mechanism which has given me the highest moment. I am now trying to check the moments at non hinge locations in order to check that the moments there are not surpassing the moment of resistance for the beam/column. I am struggling to know what direction the moment is assumed to be, please find the attachment with the drawing and arrows without arrowheads indicating an unknown direction.

Many thanks

Your moments occur at connection points. Use end plate connections to develop the full section moment and shear. Also check for load reversals (shakedown).
