Plate impact modelling - contact displacement CDISP

Hi all,

I am modelling elastic impact test of a rectangular plate/composite and I am just wondering on what is the appropriate way to look at the deflection of the plate. I know how to look at the displacement using the field output unique nodal, but there is another option in the field and history output requests which is contact displacement (CDISP). I did request this option but when I looked at the results, there was no output related to contact displacement. Also, there is no warning nor error messages related to CDISP. Does anyone have an idea on what contact displacement CDISP means and what does it represent?

Cdisp is the collection name for the following outputs.: COPEN and CSLIP1 and 2 and CSLIPEQ, thus look for these two outputs instead.

yeah I know this but when I request CDISP, nothing related to it show up in the ODB file. no output is written to the ODB file

You asked quote Does anyone have an idea on what contact displacement CDISP means and what does it represent? It was answered.

Now you know? Except of the normal posting guidelines one obvious one is post questions/problems that you want help to find an answer/solution to, not questions that you already have an answer/solution to. Also try to be more specific with what you want help with, it saves a lot of time for everyone, because rather then going back an forth for information we can do it just a once if the correct info is given first time around in the original post.

Look in the abaqus help see that your version can give this output for abaqus explicit. Check also if it is given for analytical surfaces (it might not be given in explicit in your version, e.g., for analytical rigid surfaces, and if it is given then it might not be available to see in the GUI until the deformable body makes actual contact with the rigid one). Also if general contact is not used (and say surface to surface explicit is), then it does not show. If general contact is used, then it should be seen.

You have not, but a small thank you for someone trying to help would do (see posting guidelines).

A feedback also if what I have written helped would be what we would need to help you really (not any other comments).

First, Thank you for your time. Just to be clear here. My first reply was to elaborate on my question and your first reply, but maybe I was not clear. I did not say your first reply was not helpful. Anyway, lets not go off topic. Thank you again and appreciate your time.

No worries.

Did the suggestions given help you (just in case anyone will have a similar question), that is were you perhaps using a surface to surface explicit contact, or ??

My setup is as follow, I have the impactor created as discrete rigid body and the plate is deformable body. the interaction is general contact with specifying the master and slave surfaces. I have run my job but I dont see anything written for the CDISP even after the deformable body makes contact with the rigid body. Currently, I am going over ABAQUS user guide to get more info. I will update you once I solve this issue. please share your thoughts if you have any helpful comments.

Thanks!

I do not think I have any more ideas. Last question: do you see COPEN General Contact and/or CSLIP General Contact in the drop list related to which variable to post-process?

I dont see both variables in the field output nor the history field output.

bit of a reach here but are you using an old version of CAE?

i think CDISP was only made available for output in explicit from v2016 onward.

maybe that could be it - see here

I think I know my issue here. So, I do the setup of my model in ABAQUS v2017 but I take my input file and run it on a server which has an old version of ABAQUS, so the CDISP get deleted or ignored. Thank you all for the help.
