Please help with PDM!!!

I am suddenly unable to delete individual files from projects. I get various messages like "Not authorized to delete documents" and "there's no document available for ownership change"

I had accidentally checked in a large assy from my hardrive and deleted the copies. It was only for test purposes so I panicked and in order to retrieve my files back to my hardrive, I checked them out and then physically went to my workspace folder and cut and paste them back to their original location. When this happens, how does PDMWorks react? I guess these are "lost files"? They still show up in the vault view as being owned by me but there are really no files.

Bottom line: how do I get ride of these "files" from the vault view through the standalone client and/or SW client interface?

Also, I am confused as to the difference between "own" and "check out". I was under impression that they were the same thing. Can someone break this down for me?

Only an Admin has the right to delete project folders. The Admin also can give rights to delete files from the vault or not. The first place to start is to ask the Admin what rights you have.

Next the files that you check out of the vault are just copies being written to your hard drive. The files should still reside in the vault unless you or the Admin have deleted them from there.

Something to try is to Refresh the vault view to see if what you are trying to delete is actually still there.

Please ignore my ranting! The problem has been resolved.

The only thing I would like to clear up is the difference in owning v/s checking out a file.

I am aware of what each allows you to do, however its puzzling that you cannot check out a file if it is already owned (by you), but as soon as you check out a file you own it.

Besides the obvious things you are able to do with a file you own in pdm (rename, move, delete, etc.) Is there any other advantage to simply owning a file, w/o checking it out?

This is how I understand it. Anyone may correct me if I am wrong.

Owning a file prevents others in your work group from modifying the files and checking them back into PDM Works Vault. When you just check out a file to your local work area it is just a copy of it, however if you have that checked out file open other user's will only be able to open a read-only version of that file. Once you close the file then the user's who have a read-only version can now save their modifications without your approval.

You are correct jksolid.
MimiN63, checkin out is only if no one owns it. If you already own it, you just "open" it not check it out.

'Check out' is to take ownership AND open i.e copy to the local working area with write access.
If you already have ownership the option to 'Check out' disappears and 'Open' will copy the files locally with write access.
If you 'Open' without taking ownership you will have read only access.
Having ownership will prevent write access by other users but also allows you to change properties, rename, delete, rollback etc if granted via PdmwVaultAdmin.
