PLMXML error on Parasolid import?

Hello,

We're trying to import some *.X_T parasolid files and every time I get this error. Any ideas what exactly this means?

Could be a lot of things.

First, are you importing these into NX? If so, I suggest that you contact GTAC and see if they can help.

If you're importing this into some product other than NX (or some other UGS product), it may still be best to start with GTAC.

Could it be the .x_t file is a newer version of Parasolid than his seat of NX supports (i.e. a Parasolid from NX4 trying to import into NX1)?

I realize that when exporting the Parasolid from NX4 the user would have the OPTION to set the Parasolid version, but it could have been an oversight and left on the NX4 version by mistake.

Also knowing what software created the Parasolid might help GTAC.

As Tim asked, what is the source of the parasolid?
We have also recently had this problem. As John explained it, once a third party gets ahold of the parasolid kernel, UGS has no control what they do with it. Our solution was to open the parasolid in another CAD package (SolidWorks in this case) and save it back out from there. That procedure has been working well for us.

I got it figured out - you have to create a new part in NX4 then do a Parasolid IMPORT (vs. open). OPEN fails every time... Thanks for the help!!

Yeah...yet another glaring inconsistency in what can be opened vs. what has to be imported.

Actually that's not true. In NX 4, when you go to File -> Open, like many other Windows application, you have the option of indicating the file 'type' that you wish to open by selecting among a list of optional formats using the 'Files of type:' field at the bottom of the File Open dialog.

You can 'Open' parasolids in NX4.0? I had always wondered why it wasn't that way in the previous versions.

You can't 'OPEN' Parasolid - try it

True, when you "open" it, you will be looking at a .prt file with the parasolid in it, not a true parasolid file on its own.

NX can ONLY open an NX file, period. We offer many 'built-in' converters (some free, some for an extra cost) that will allow files of other formats to be 'opened' AS an NX part file.

Are ther actually ANY programs that can open a parasolid as a parasolid (or iges or step)?

Well I'm not sure what you're expecting. Parasolid is a kernel modeler and it provides an exchange format so that topological data can be exported/imported. It's like a neutral file that needs some sort of CAD product in order to 'convert' it into something that could be viewed or manipulated. By itself, it's like a radio or TV signal being broadcast or sent over a cable. If you don't have a 'receiver' that converts the electromagnetic energy into something that can be heard or seen, you don't really have anything that you can do much with.
