Does anyone know of any specific plumbing codes that specify stainless steel pipe material grades permissible for potable water? I'm mainly interested in codes for use in cold and hot water applications.

Thanks.

The manufacturers will tell you if its acceptable. We in the UK use mannessmann (Mapress) ss pipes for potable water. Thats ok. 316 and 304 ss are also ok. Jointing is important so that dirt cant get trapped.

The advantage of copper is that the copper leaches into the water and I understand kills bacteria. The old cowboys also used to put silver dollars in the water buts to kill bacteria.
