Ply Profiling Dry Fabrics

Hi all ,

Does anyone have any experience of automated CAD ply profiling dry fabrics ?

I am currently doing some investigations into the issue and am having trouble maintaining the profiles as they are quite delicate .

Does anyone have any knowledge of possible stabilisation films that may be used or ways of treating the fabric to stiffen it and prevent deterioration of the profile once cut ?

Working with dry fabric can be very difficult, as you've seen. If you can't use prepreg there are binderized fabrics available or you can apply a binder yourself. In non-aerospace, non-critical applications I've often seen 3M spray adhesive used. But for any critical structural application the binder most be compatible with the matrix resin.

Binders are often non-tacky solid resins that can be applied as a powder and then melted onto the fabric. It is best if a form of the matix resin itself is used to insure compatibility. If you are going to infuse the preform, the binder can easily migrate with the flow front and get very concentrated. That is one reason that compatibility is so important. Binders are usually applied at 5 to 10% by weight to fabric.
