Pneumatic Sov configuration Puzzle

Hi all i am from the electrical forumn but i am puzzled with a pneumatic question.
I have a dump valve at the bottom of a vessel which is energise to dump. We have to control this valve via two 5 port solenoids. How do i configure the ports if possible for each solenoid to dump independant or both together. I can't seem to suss out the venting of the valve.

Hello Forhhamspark,

You should place both solenoids parallel. Actually you do not need 5/2 way solenoids. 3/2 way valves will do the job. But this also means that you can still use the 5/2 way solenoids you have and only need to plug off the extra gates.

Conclusion:
- Place both solenoids parallel.
- Connect the air supply to both P-ports.
- Connect the dump valve to both A-ports.
- Both EA-ports should be vented.
- Both B-ports should be blocked off.

In case one or both of the solenoids are energised your dump valve will get air pressure.

That is the case if the outlet valve was spring operated to close. But what if the valve needs pressure to shut.

If you can only use the two solenoids I would need some time to think about that.

A simple solution would be to use an extra computing relay.
E.g.
- put a reversing relay (Fairchild model 25) in the line to the dumpvalve and connect the output to the other side of the dump valve.
- put an low selector relay (Fairchild model 90) between the two B-ports and connect the output to the other side of the dumpvalve.

Are the valves bidirectional? Or can they only be used in the flowdirection on the drawing?

Solenoid valves SMC SY3120-5LOU-C6.
Standard 5 Port Sov i guess bi-directional but not 100%.

Hi Forhhamspark,

I looked at this fresh after the weekend and have no better solution then earlier suggested. Adding a reversing relay would be my preferred suggestion.

With the solenoids you have, you'd just blow through the valve actuator and out the other solenoid if the valves are in opposite states. Dual-coil solenoids with center-off position would allow for independent actuation, as long as the two solenoids are not oppositely powered. Synchronized, or one on and the other deenergized would both work, but if the solenoid valves are oppositely energized you would have a malfunction.
