We are looking to start taking point cloud data and developing AutoCAD 3D models from them. Our primary aim is to capture structural building elements, and piping elements - with some equipment locations thrown in for good measure. What are some process and software recommendations for getting from the raw data to the end product. (I know this is posed as a very simple, neophyte-level question, but we have been doing our homework on this. I just wanted to pose it in the most basic form possible.)

I assume you have software to register the scans.

Cloudwork (from Leica), Kubit, and point sense are fairly popular. Apparently CAD 2016 has some new features that are very handy for processing point clouds, but we have not downloaded the new version yet. Have you looked on the 3D laser scanning forum? All the major software companies have forum segments.

There are also quite a few services overseas to convert the raw data into a useful model.
