Point descriptions in topo survey data

Hi, are there any guidelines about providing point descriptions in the topo survey data? For example, if you have 10,000+ points, do you need to provide descriptions for all of these points? Any advice will be appreciated !

To my knowledge, there is no universally accepted standard. Most companies and agencies have their own standards. One can easily find standards for various state DOTs for example. It is extremely helpful to use description codes for ALL of the points and to follow the standard being used for a project.

The file extension is *.las, and it does have a (universally?) accepted format that is well documented. A few years back we were having difficulty finding a conversion file for a point cloud to AutoCAD and I used Delphi to 'cobble' together a reader and input... was clunky, but, worked with a little fiddling.

We usually use the local State DOT's standard point description when doing site & roadway work, elsewise we default to our local State DOT's. When all else fails, I write down my own point codes in the field book, ie GND = Ground, FH = Fire Hydrant, …
