can pole slipping (due to loss of excitation) lead to failure in diesel gen set?

Yes, results of a pole slip are similar to an out of phase close, at least in the size units I am familiar with.

Have found damaged flex plates and torsional couplings, a couple of instances of damaged crankshafts, and several sets of blown diodes and surge suppressors, to name a few encountered.
