This is my first question to this forum. I'm currently exploring the possibility of putting explosion proof "shields" over some 345kV potheads that we have since they are relatively close to a roadway and building. From your experiances what do you think the likelyhood that 345kV potheads terminating HPFF cable will explode during a failure? Even if a blast would occur does anyone have an idea of how bad it could be. I'm trying to investigate if a blast shield around each pothead is even necessary.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I think anything porcelain running at high voltage has the capacity to fail explosively, be it cable sealing ends, post insulators, bushings, surge arresters etc. To give you an idea of the effects, have a look at the attached report on a CT failure, and the picture of a large chunk of porcelain embedded in the office furniture after it had passed right through the wall. You could consider ballistic shields if it is an area of concern. I would carry out a risk assessment and include the known failure history for your pot head in the calculation.
