Hello,

I am working on a API 620 sour water buffer tank for Sauid Aramco. One of the client's comment on tank outlet nozzle which is located on shell lower side, is that they are asking for weir plate or some protruding plate, before out outlet nozzle, to avoid carry over, in to the pump, of any solid particles accumulated in the tank.

Is this a viable option? considering FEA analaysis will be required to design such weir plate, and add to the cost. personally i have never seen a weir plate for this purpose in tank for this purpose.

I though of upward elbow before outlet nozzle will be a good option, but process do not want that because it will increase the HHLL and subsequently tank height. So what arrangement can i propose to avoid carry over of soild accumulated in bottom.

Regards,
Inam

Consider installing some type of suction strainer inside of the tank.

The strainer will, of course, eventually clog

It may be possible to attach a low pressure compressed air system piping so that the strainer can be periodically cleared

But, if the vessel is collecting solids continuously, it is only time until it is packed solid ...

Why would it need FEA?

This is a simple plate. A little unusual but if the client wants it... Not sure why you can't prevent solids getting in there in the first place, but we can't see what you can.

Or just install a "bolt catcher" type course strainer in the pump inlet line.

Of course a drawing or sketch of what you propose would help.

Also do you mean LLLL instead of HHLL??
Can't see why an upward elbow would affect the high level?

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Dear inammanj123,

Do you have siphon drains in the tank?

Sour water tank outlet nozzle and piping ,in another saying, inlet of sour water pumps. I will suggest the outlet nozzle as, downward elbow with bell type entrance and vortex breaker. The inlet area of should be sized to minimize the entrance velocity.

If the sour water containing settleable solids, the tank bottom should be CONE-DOWN BOTTOM with sump and the sludge water that accumulates in the sump must be pumped out periodically.
