I am designing a sport netting structure (post and pier).

just wondering what formula or rule of thumbs are out there for required embedment of the post into the pier in order to ensure the post acts as a fixed connection into the pier?

pier is 450mm dia and 3.5m deep
post is 219X6.8 CHS
post is cable tension point loaded with 3 anchor points at the top each with 3.5KN each cable. loads are along x and z axis with another inbetween at 45degrees.

I'll be following this thread with interest, but as far as I know, there's not any really well defined way to analyze this sort of embedment and determine the optimal embedment length.

In the past, for low enough demands, I've sufficed by iterating until I developed transfer stresses (bearing and shear) that I was comfortable with.

Make sure, if outside, that there is no void in the tube below the surface... cannot drain and may have damage caused by water trapped in the lower part of the tube.
