A client wishes to add a post frame storage building on his commercial property, but the distance to the adjacent lot line requires the sidewall to be a 2 hour fire-rated construction. Has anyone ever done a 2-hour fire rated sidewall? In a 2011 UL test (UL test #V304), the NFBA has successfully achieved 1, 2, and 3-hour ratings for an end wall or interior partition wall with the use of multiple layers of 5/8" gypsum board and tight wall girt spacing. We have used these approved designs for end wall addition projects when the building allowable area is exceeded. A side wall (bearing wall) is a whole different animal. Please see attached concept detail. I'm showing the gyp board extending up to the roof level, but since the roof trusses need to penetrate the gyp board to be secured to the columns, I think that will be a problem. We are trying other options, including having the client reduce the building size to avoid the fire separation issue entirely. Any advice is appreciated.
