Hello again

Quick question. in AWS d1.1 2010 I tried looking to see where it states that after PWHT if NDE is required or not.
some people say only if its stated by the customer. I was always used to pre and post NDE. If ya'll don't mind clearing this up for me.

Thanks in advance.

In D1.1 there is no specific requirement for NDE related to PWHT (before or after). Either you specify in your I&TP or your procedure (and accepted by customer) or the customer specify it for you.

The only NDE required for production welds is VT. The exception is category B and C welds loaded in tensile that are subject to fatigue. Those two categories must be subjected to volumetric examination per D1.1.

If the Owner wants specific welds to be examined by a specific NDE method in addition to visual examination, it must be stated in the contract documents, i.e., project specifications or drawings. The extent of NDE, connections, etc. must be included in the contract documents. The qualifications of the technicians, the specific procedures, etc. are subject to the Engineer's review and approval. It is always best (my opinion) to spell out the requirements in the project specifications. A little redundancy is not always a bad thing if it clarifies the Owner's position.

Best regards - Al
