Is it wise to leave an engineering resume continually posted on major job boards like Monster and Careerbuilder, or should a person take copies down once they are actively employed? I ask because I wonder if current employers ever check those boards and wonder why my resume might still be out there. The main drawback I see to leaving it out there all the time is over-saturation, but taking it down could also result in missed opportunities. Any words of wisdom on this topic?

I'm not crazy about job boards in general. I've never gotten a single worthwhile offer from any of them. I've had better luck with contacts from Linkedin and Facebook. On those your resume can just be part of your profile and doesn't look so much like you are still keeping a line in the water, so to speak.

I got my current job through being on a job board, though my impression is that's the exception not the norm.

I didn't delete my profiles after getting the job, though I don't think I've had any more offers either!

the red flag for HR will be if you keep it up to date.

I take mine down until I'm interested in what else is out there, but I see no major issue with leaving it up (or updating it).

Most search algorithms used by recruiters flag changes and new postings. I'll get more calls within a week of an update or new posting than in a year with an old posting.
 
As far as your employer is concerned, they need to respect that you have a career to maintain. The only person qualified to maintain your career path is you. Your employer sure isn't going to do that for you.
 
Take it down while gainfully employed UNLESS you are looking else where,

IF your current employer sees it - they may not be too happy. If I found one of my employees up there - no more raises, no more bonuses no more levels of responsibility. I would figure they are not HAPPY and need to go - either on their time or mine!!

Maybe I am old fashioned and I am old (59) - but that is just the way I do business.
 
Think of it this way. If you found your wife on MatchMaker.com, would you want her to see your profile left there, or you to see her profile left there? Nooooooooo!

I found my resume quite readily by google-ing my name, if that has any bearing on your decision.

"Structural engineering is the art of modelling materials we do not wholly understand into shapes we cannot..."...ah...screw it, we don't know what the heck we are doing.
 
I leave mine up all the time. I only update it when I'm looking. Like TheTick says, HR people are going to filter for resumes that have changed recently.

I tend to get more hits on a recently updated resume on Monster, than I get from Linkedin. However, the typical quality of a Monster/Careerbuilder/etc. contact tends to be less. I get a lot of spam that way.

I have mostly worked for large companies, so they don't seem to take it personally IF they've found my resume still out there later.
