What does it mean when someone says 5 sets of 500 kcmil? Does this mean 5 500 kcmil cables per phase? So say the cables are 100' long then you would need 1500' of cable?

Redskin Yes. 5 sets (of anything) means 5x (whatever size at whatever length) PER PHASE. Thus, for a 3-phase system, that would be 5x (100 ft) of (500 kCM) x (3 phases) = AT LEAST 1500 ft of 500 kCM.

How would it be in a LV solidly grounded , 3-phase with neutral system?
(a) Yes . 5 conductors of 500 kCM in each 3-phases 100 ft. Total 5 x 3ph x 100ft = 1500 ft.
(b) What would be the number and the size in (kCM) of the Neutral conductor ?
(c) What would be the number and the size in (kCM) of the Ground conductor ?
(d) The " 5 sets of ....." refers to the phase conductors only. The quantity and the size of the Neutral and the Ground conductors shall be specified separately, in order to avoid any confusion.
Note: In LV, the Neutral and Ground conductors are usually < than the phase conductors.
