Hi all,
I am currently researching motherboard and processor combinations for a new workstation. I am currently looking at an intel Xenon box by Asus (Asus AP1720-E2 ). I was wondering if AMD Opteron was a good alternative. This work station will be used for CAD (SW & SE) & Ms Office. The OS will be Win XP pro. I am sort of a newbie when it comes to CAD workstations and would glady welcome any input on your experience with both AMD and Intel Machines.

Thanks!!!

My workstation uses an Opteron and gets along very well, plus it was relatively cheap. I'd recommend checking out some CAD reviews on workstations and seeing especially what sorts of components play nicely with one another. Check out the links above that CorBlimeyLimey posted and search this forum for AMD and Intel and find other more detailed posts.

I highly recommend AMD these days, especially for workstations. Check out Xi Computer and what they offer in systems--you might want to consider buying a preconfigured Opteron unit from them.
