Hi, I would like to know what are tinkling about preheat 2 different thickness according to ASME section IX.

If I want to weld, for example, A516 gr 70 with one part 20 mm with 60 mm, I think we need to consider the thicker part for the preheating but in ASME section IX no specification about this.

What are you thinking?

I'm right?

Thank,

Louis

You are absolutely correct regarding preheat - the thicker material at the weld joint should be the guide for temperature and hold time.

Thank you for your answer but I looking forward an ASME interpretation if it's possible because I have a supplier that he don't understand my explanation about this issue. Our contract is based on ASME section VIII div. 1 and section IX.

If you have something about ASME explanation I will appreciate.

Thank

LouisLac;
The Code considers preheat as mandatory only when looking at exemptions for PWHT. Please review Nonmandatory
Appendix R "Preheating". In the Introduction and for specific material groups the recommended preheat is based on chemical composition and material thickness, which means thicker materials would require preheat.
