Pressing Bushings

Does anyone have a good formula for calculating how many
psi is required for pressing a bushing into a hole (aluminum casting)? I need to design a press & need to
make sure I size my air or hyd. cylinders correctly.

this question needs clarification. the size and wall thickness of the pieces will affect press tonnages greatly.are these bushings in very tiny or very large machines?
you may need to experiment to zero in, and i would not use air in any press operation that requires some degree of control as air is compressible and reactions can change drastically with small differences in resistance.

I would like to also add to the suggestion that bobc makes by indicating that you only say that you need to press this aluminum bushing into a hole. However, you make no mention of the material of the hole and the type of interference you are talking about. Note that you need to take this into consideration not only to determine forces but to see if there will be some type of deformation during entry ... of either the bushing or the hole itself. Yes, I know that some deformation will be present but it should not be enough to damage your parts to the extent that your product is not meeting specs.

Consider using LN2, then you won't need a press or fancy fixturing. In tooling, with a nominal .0003-.0005" pressfit bushing, a few minutes in LN2 allows it to fall into the hole. There is little opportunity for the bushing to "cock" in the hole or "shear" the sides of the bore. s-)
