Pressure Relief Valve Operation 1

Hi there,

I am using FLOWMASTER software to first of all simulate the operation of a pressure relief valve operation and also to study the effects of wave propagation within the valve and blow down effects.
For the simulation, I am assuming compressible transient conditions over 60s although the operating time of my valve is supposed to be 120s.
I have two questions:
1. As I am using assuming compressible flow, do I use the conditions of a convergent divergent nozzle to verify my results?
2. How would I simulate wave propagation and what sort of equations would I use to verify those results.

1. Yes, but be careful you don't set up a standing wave in the throat of the con-div nozzle. Essentially you're interested with sub sonic flow in such a compressible flow.

2. Compressible flow, probably Prandtl. There are a host of others but it depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Thankyou very much for your reply Cockroach.

Further to my last poste, I am having problems using FLOWMASTER because the software does not allow me to use Safety Relief Valves or Poppet Relief Valves in a compressible transient situation. The reference help function on the software suggests me to use a conical orifice along with a safety relief valve. But again because I am running a compressible transient simulation, errors stating that I cannot use safety relief valve components in the network keep coming up. Any help would be appreciated.

PS: I am really struggling with getting some hand calculations to verify my results. Any links to journals would be appreciated as well.

Thanks very much
TS
