Hello all,

According to CSA-B51 5.1.4
"Only whole numbers shall be used for specifying pressure and temperature ratings on nameplates."

Is it possible to indicate the pressure rating on the Nameplate in different units then it appears on the ASME U-1 MDR?
For example:
MAWP=3.1BAR
Since only whole numbers shall be used on nameplates, the value on the nameplate will be 310kPa
But, I will leave the ASME U-1 MDR with the BAR units for pressure.

Please advise.

Thank you very much.

Not sure where you're building this vessel in Canada, but Alberta used to state that only US Customary and SI were permitted. Since bar is not an SI unit ABSA would not permit it on the U-1 or the nameplate.

Personally, I would use 310 kPa for everything (drawings, calculations, nameplate, U-1, etc.). Less chance for confusion if only one value is used throughout.

Geoff13 - Pressure units for the nameplate will be kPa.
The question is if I can use BAR on the U-1?

oknow - U-4(h) stated that "Units (either primary or alternative) may be shown parenthetically"
Is it means that I can write both BAR and kPa on the U-1?

Thank you for your help.

As I noted "ABSA would not permit it on the U-1 or the nameplate". If you're building somewhere else you'll have to check with the provincial authority.

I believe U-4 to be clear. Suggest you discuss with your AIA. It is the ASME Certificate Holders responsibility to check what the Jurisdictional requirements are. IMO it shall be done prior to accepting any contract.Should have the user or designated agent complete Appendix KK Forms. Ask them to initial and date then return. That form becomes very valuable in case there are any disputes on contractual or compliance issues (U-2).

B51 mandates the nameplate follow the ASME Code of Construction. You have to be consistent in units throughout...stick with kpa on MDR. See App. GG. along with U-4.
