Pressure vessels

Hello All,

If Pressure vessels are designed and fabricated to BS 5500 and in service. Can we follow the API 510 requirements during in service? (Which includes Section VIII): IF NOT what is the alternative? As BS 5500 is not normally in use widely.

Hi Sam,

Since you mention BS5500 please note that this document is no longer a BS document but is now a Published Document PD5500 with the standard being superseded by the PED regulations.

Having said that, it is not uncommon to design to PD5500 as the old British Standard as it largely compatible and adds a few extra things. The UK pressure vessel inspection regime relies on a qualified person producing a Written Scheme of Examination for the specific system under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 - i.e. it's bespoke to the system.

I'm not expert, but it seems very likely that a scheme based on the API510 requirements would be deemed suitable. If you are in the US API would seem to be the way to go. Elsewhere in the world, I don't know.

I figure that has at least a chance to help if you are in the right part of the world.

Hi,
My understanding is that these guidelines are now covered by the PED(Pressure Equipment Directive).An extract from this is as attached.
On the same note the scope of API 510 are as follows(some extracts) :-
1.1.1 Coverage
This inspection code covers the in-service inspection, repair, alteration, and rerating activities for pressure vessels
and the pressure-relieving devices protecting these vessels. This inspection code applies to all hydrocarbon and
chemical process vessels that have been placed in service unless specifically excluded per 1.2.2; but it could also be
applied to process vessels in other industries at owner/user discretion. This includes:
a) vessels constructed in accordance with an applicable construction code [e.g. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code (ASME Code)];

c) [highlight #FCE94F]vessels constructed and approved as jurisdictional special based upon jurisdiction acceptance of particular
design, fabrication, inspection, testing, and installation[/highlight];

With due quality requirements in place application of API 510 may be feasible, provided design, repair alteration program, personnel qualification to API 510 are in place. However acceptance of the AI would be mandatory.
