Please can someone explain how the bevels at the seams of cut plate (after oxy-cutting of plate)are produced. I thought quicky or straight cutters may be used but I am not sure of the accuracy levels achievable.

In pressure vessel fabrication shops what is the standard methods for generating accurate bevels of plate following oxy-cutting or plasma cutting process?

Are there machining heads available on the market, if yes do they require an operator or automatically and what are the levels of accuracy achievable.

cardiff10, different processes are used, depending.

Bevels can be burned or plasma cut on plate using a track burner, or they can be ground. We have a plate beveler that machines the bevels, but truly we don't use it often, mostly on stainless.

On material that WILL burn, I would say that's the way to go.

Thank you SnTman. Can the bevel angle be adjusted on the straight line track cutter? do you process parallel edges simultaneously, for heat input etc or this is not required?

our material range is carbon steel A516 Gr70 and Stainless steel 316L.

cardiff10, track burners I am familar with allow the bevel angle to be set as wanted. Usually one edge is burned at a time.

The SA-516-70 will burn very well, if the set up is right, very little grinding will be necessary. The 316L will not burn and plasma, machining or grinding will be needed.

The beveler we have is pretty much a manual set-up, but it does feed itself down the plate edge. It needs a smooth and fairly level surface to run on, and we sometimes just put a plate on the floor for it.

A high degree of accuracy is not normally needed for weld bevels.

Mike
