Presumptive load bearing values in IBC

Hello All,

I'm designing some cast in place pier foundation for a elevated equipment pad. I do not have a soils report and the client does not want to pay for one. That said in using the allowable values in table 1806.2 of the IBC, would it be prudent to add the weight of the concrete in calculation the actual toe bearing pressure?

Or add the difference in specific weight (density) x height (unless you are already adding the overburden pressure on to the allowable. Also I would also state the assumed bearing pressure to be verified by owner. They can have a geotech come out when they dig whole and test it (penetrometer). Prolly - $100?

An investigation with a hand auger and a DCP with a brief report could be done for about $1000 for a small pad such as this. That could meet the IBC requirements. You should educate your client about the building code requirements.

Thanks for all the tips folks, the client was able to locate an old geotechnical report for a building that is on the same property.
