I was checking out the increased toys in Simulation compared to express and was wondering if the price estimate I got from my VAR is correct or if I perhaps asked for the wrong thing.

We currently have SolidWorks Standard 2010 with the yearly maintenance plan. The quote I received said it was $5000 to upgrade that seat from Standard to Premium. Does that sound about right?

It has been close to 10 years since we originally bought SW and since we have been on the yearly maintenance plan I haven't kept up with what the different tiers cost. I was thinking it was more like a $3000 difference between Std and Premium but maybe I'm confused :).

If the price you were given includes subscription (and taxes ?), it's probably about right.

From memory the prices in USD were;
Standard = 4000 + 1200 (Subscription)
Professional = 5500 + 1500
Premium = 8000 + 1800

Ahh, yes I forgot about the international clarification, this is in USD.

Thanks for the rough breakdown in tiers CorBlimeyLimey.

SolidWorks or your VAR will sometimes offer deals where you can get the Premium license for paying the standard rate and paying the Premium Subscription cost for premium. This was being offered at end of 2009 release and beginning of 2010 but that may only be for new customers. Usually the special deals are offered to boost sales.

Check into whether you can get a special deal like this or something similar. Your VAR should be able to get deals for you. So I'd ask if there were any other pricing options.
