I have been asked to paint a skylight that is made of cedarwood. I know it is not normal to paint cedar so can anyone recommend a suitable primer?

Cedar is tough because of the tannins in the wood... but check around with the paint manufacturers web sites and I think you will find products for cedar. As you have indicated, primer is VERY important.

Suggesions: Olympic paints/stains, Behr, Flood, .. these are most typical in wood coatings, but Sherwin Williams, Duron, Zinnser, etc probably have coatings as well that would be good primer.

Depending if you a using a clear or pigmented coating. For pigmented coatings I perfer a stain blocker sealer (Kills or Zinner)vs a sealer. This reduces the bead through mentioned above. I do not have the experence with clear sealers to comment on those.
